There are no forced shopping trips.
In one location a guide offered a stop at one, and we agreed because we wanted to see the workshop areas, but did no shopping.
But there was no pressure from any of the guides to stop at shops or factories.
They also arranged all of our air flights and train tickets and we had no hassle on any of these.
They ensured we got on the right flights and trains and actually went on board the trains to make sure we knew the process and got the right compartments.
If you use trains, i strongly recommend the soft sleepers much more comfortable and private at not much of an increase in cost.
If time is more important i would splurge and go by air.
But with 5 or 6 people, if time is not important the train is economical and it helps you acclimate easier to the altitude and thus avoid possible altitude sickness in tibet.
China highlights got every one of the 3 train trips we took no problem.
You also have to have a permit, which china highlights totally arranged using our itinerary and copies of our passports, no problem at all.
Strongly recommending visiting tibet especially , the summer palace, jokhang temple, the shopping area, and at least one of the monasteries near the town.
If you have time, go to one of the outlying monasteries in order to get a sense of the countryside.
As far as accommodations, highlights can recommend good ones but we stayed at , which was highlight recommended to us.
It was excellent, nice rooms, tibetan designs, a nice courtyard, fantastic food and an amazing staff who were attentive and helpful.
